Inspiring Creativity and Love for History at the 2026 Provincial Heritage Fair

HALIFAX, NS – On June 12, 2026, Saint Mary’s University (SMU) will open its campus to the province’s most creative and inquisitive young minds for the annual Provincial Heritage Fair. The event showcases the extraordinary research, storytelling, and creativity of Nova Scotian students exploring their rich cultural and historical roots.

The fair brings together approximately 80 students in grades 4-9, from across the province for a day of experiential learning, expert judging, and celebration.

“The biggest thing that stands out is how engaged, creative, smart, and accomplished these kids are,” says Professor Kirrily Freeman, Acting Dean of Arts at Saint Mary’s University, who has organized the fair for over a decade. “They’re really extraordinary, and the work they do is inspiring.”

A Deep Connection to Family and Community

What sets the Nova Scotia Provincial Heritage Fair apart from other student showcases is the deeply personal, community-anchored nature of the projects. The only formal requirement is that projects must connect to heritage in Canada, allowing students to explore diverse and unique narratives.

“There is such a personal dimension to the projects here in Nova Scotia,” says Dr. Freeman. “Heritage Fair encourages students to learn about their families and communities, and to appreciate the richness of where they come from. We see projects rooted in folklore, family heirlooms, and personal histories.”

Hands-On History and Culture

Students have their research evaluated by a dedicated panel of SMU Arts faculty and heritage professionals—including local museum curators, archivists, and interpreters—and participate in immersive campus workshops including a geocaching adventure, hands-on exploration of physical anthropology, and a guest workshop on the Amherst Royals hockey team.

Celebration and Recognition

Following the afternoon activities, the public and dignitaries—including university leadership and provincial representatives—will have an opportunity to view the students’ impressive projects.
